Academic & Writing Coaching
As an academic coach, I help teenagers practice the skills they need to become self-sufficient, life-long learners. We focus on building skills related to time management, organization, study strategies, writing, self-advocacy, and independent problem solving.
The process begins with a parent/student consultation, during which we discuss a) key concerns, b) student strengths, c) specific goals, and d) logistical details. We then begin with ongoing sessions.
Most of my clients see me for the duration of the school year; however, it is often effective to meet for a minimum of 6 sessions with a particular goal in mind.

Writing Revealed Summer Series
6 sessions in July and August 2010
Summer is a great time to hone skills that get lost during the school year. Essay writing is certainly one of these skills. But what teen wants to spend the summer writing essays?
Writing Revealed to the rescue! This summer coaching program guides teens through working on a 5-paragraph essay about a topic about which they are an expert: soccer, video games, fashion, favorite music, and more.
In 6 hour-long individual sessions, students will learn to:
- Brainstorm everything they know about an area of expertise
- Look for patterns in ideas and create a strong outline
- Write a complex thesis statement using an easy formula
- Craft compelling topic sentences for each paragraph
- Choose strong evidence that proves the thesis
- Draft, revise and edit — the differences between these tasks, and the importance of doing each one
During Writing Revealed, students will work with online writing tools including Webspiration and GoogleDocs as well as old school tools including pen, paper and index cards. All tools and content will be tailored to your students’ unique learning style.
Students leave Writing Revealed with ingrained habits for how to write strong essays, but also with a sense of satisfaction about how smart they sound, having translated their area of expertise into a rock star essay!
